2001-2002 Rifle Season Outlook
Buckeyes look to defend last year's Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference Championship Abhijeet Konduskar returns for the Buckeyes coming off of a WIRC championship season in the smallbore and air rifle.
Nov. 21, 2001 This seasons' team has a good solid base returning from last years Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference winning team of Gloria Chang, Levi Kill, Abhijeet Konduskar, Jon Nicolazzo, Jessica Sears, and John Stellwag.
Chang finished second in air rifle at the WIRC championship and was named named to the second team All-WIRC in air rifle. Kill, an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete, competed in 10 of 11 matches last season. Konduskar, the WIRC champion in smallbore and air rifle, finished 12th in the NCAA smallbore rifle individual championship. Nicolazzo, an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete, was a second team ALL-WIRC selection in smallbore. Sears, in limited action, maintained aggregate scores of over 1,500 last season. Stellwag, an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete, finished third in smallbore rifle at the WIRC Championships and was a second team All-WIRC selection in smallbore and air rifle.
The incoming freshman look strong also. All are award winning shooters with varius backgrounds and strengths to offer the team. Rachel Ashbrook is a smallbore shooter having competited on her high school rifle team and also very strong in metallic silhouette target shooting, winning eight gold medals.
She is an avid deer hunter and accomplished horse rider. Amanda Clark competed on her high school rifle team and is an avid bear hunter and accomplished musician.
James Collier has competed on the Howland High School Rifle team and earned many awards in high school shootingis a very enthusiastic shooter which will make up for lack of experience in heavy competitive shooting. Ryan Kohatsu competed on the Waiakea High School Rifle Team serving two-years as team captain, An outstanding three time scholar-athlete, he earned the gold medal in 3-position air rifle and a silver medal in standing air rifle in the 2001 Hawaii State Junior Olympic Rifle Championships.
"This is a good group of shooters with a strong work ethic and a will to win," head coach Pat Cherry said. "I think they will do the university and themselves proud. Last year I predicted that last years young team was the beginning of several good years for OSU shooting. We won every major award in the Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference and placed one shooter in the NCAA finals. A couple of shooters got hit by grade problems which we have worked out, but that held the team as a whole out of the NCAA finals. This year should be better as last seasons shooters have a year more experience in both shooting and handling college and this group of freshman will be ready to step in any openings that may appear."
