Oct. 12, 1997 Rifle Team Shows Promise Against Favored Kentucky
On October 11th the Ohio State rifle team opened their 1997-98 season with a match with the University of Kentucky. The Buckeyes, coming in with all the returning team members from last year also had with them the talents of three new shooters, freshmen Jes Antolik, Timothy DeChant and Randy Kloha, bring years of added shooting experience to the team.
In the smallbore portion of the competition, three Buckeyes shot personal bests, but it was not enough as the well rounded Kentucky team came out on top. Kentucky, led by two-time NCAA All-American and team captain Mary Elsass, shot a score of 4601/4800. Their second team also did well posting a total smallbore score of 4567. OSU's scarlet team was eight behind with their 4526. Freshman Randy Kloha (Dover, Ohio) was high scorer withg a 1148/1200. Senior co-captain Timothy Roberts (Berlin Heights, Ohio) was second on the team with a career high 1138. Coach Patrick Cherry thought that the team did real well overall. The team had only been practicing for a week and a half before the match and was going up against the second ranked team in the country.
Air rifle was the second event of the competition. Mary Elsaas again was high scorer. She shot a very impressive 388/400 to lead all competitors. Ohio State's Dawn Kin (Lancaster, New York) was second overall with a career high 382. Dawn is coming off a very nice freshman year where she was named team MVP. In the team competition, Ohio state put together it's best air rifle score in years. Their scarlet team narrowly missed beating out Kentucky's blue team. Kentucky though proved to have a stronger and better prepared team. OSU had to settle for the loss as Kentucky took the event 1,519 to 1,501.
In the aggregate points race, Kentucky pulled out a 93 point win. The loss was tough be everyone found something to be proud of. The team shot better as a whole that it has in years, three team members had individual highs, and performances were well up from last year in spite of the fact that the team had only a week and a half to prepare. Nobody on the team would be surprised if this year they make it to the NCAA finals.
Oct. 25, 1997 Rifle Team Beats Rival Michigan
The Ohio State rifle team (1-1) got into the win column by beating Michigan in Ann Arbor, 4,437 to 3,985. OSU had high expectations, coming off their best performance in two years against Kentucky earlier this month.
OSU freshman Randy Kloha led all scorers in each event shooting an aggregate score of 1,132. In the Prone position, Kloha led with a 390/400. Ohio State team members senior Timothy Roberts, sophomore Kevin Devore and freshman Timothy DeChant all followed in the points race with totals of 389.
In the Standing position, Kloha shot a 364/400 with sophomore Dawn Kin posting a 363. The Kneeling position again belong to Kloha, shooting a 378/400 with fellow teammate Devore tying for high position honors.
The team as a whole did not do as well as expected. Shooting a 4,473 was 53 points lower than their performance against Kentucky. Disappointed, coach Pat Cherry said, "We'll take the win, but need to be better prepared for our next match." He also thought that different types of trigger and sighting drills will be necessary for picking up some quick points.
